Interestingly, spiking CPU use when using external display but not when using laptop screen only.

Assuming you're using Type-C to DP, add -igfxtypec to your boot args and provide the new PR files. Before you generate the PR files, reset NVRAM first.
 
Thanks, I've got audio working over DP and HDMI and verified iGPU power management as per your guide.

Currently, the process for reliably getting 4k@60Hz DP/50Hz HDMI is as described in this post:

  1. get the laptop to boot up without external monitor connected
  2. Login to the desktop
  3. Put the laptop into hibernation and close lid
  4. Plug the Display Port cable of the external monitor into the laptop
  5. Wake up the laptop

Whoa, that's a long process. But glad that there is a workaround.
