INITIAL ISSUES SOLVED: Please follow the instructions provided in #2 religiously. It makes a whole lot of difference. Also, PLEASE TRIPLE-CHECK YOUR NVME MODEL to save more time troubleshooting and to have a smoother run with the whole process! Took me a while to find out that mine was a PM991.

Hi! I'm fairly new to this thing though I did try to build a Hac numerous times since 2022 with it always ending up as a total failure and a huge waste of time. I gave up on making Big Sur work on an old laptop and a custom build despite following the buyer's guide from Dortania's website. The latter became my main PC for everything animation-related as I animate for a living.

Fast forward to today, I got myself a decent laptop and thought why not give it another shot? I triple-checked all the hardware if it was compatible and followed both the guides in Dortania and here to make it work (with the guide here being more noob-friendly than the former). I checked all possible angles and found myself having an easier time procuring the files, but the biggest roadblock has always been the config.plist. It didn't help that ProperTree was too frustrating to use and I tried to stick with it despite the headaches it gave me.

The usual failure points were AirportItlwm, VoodooI2C, RMISM, SMCSuperIO, and SMCProcessor. I made sure that the loading orders were correct and followed all tutorials and instructions to have Airportitlwm work (enabling AppleSecureBoot for it to work, force loading Intel80211Family, etc) but that always causes kernel panic no matter what I do and I'm already lost. It also frustrates me that setting up the keyboard and Synaptics SMBus touch is too difficult to do given how many Voodoo files are there it's too difficult to track in ProperTree it always causes kernel panic too. Lastly, VirtualSMC is also loaded next to Lilu and yet I am getting errors from SMCSuperIO and SMCProcessor and I have ZERO clue on what causes which anymore. There are little information about load order for even the core parts! I did my best inspecting opencore logs and all it did is to make me feel dumb for every rebuild I did despite trying to troubleshoot each errors. This is the sixth Opencore config rebuild that I did within the last 48 hours. I did my last compile today and I'm almost ready to throw the towel and just save up for a real Macbook at this point.

I badly want to learn how to make this properly without relying on Clover as I've heard a lot of iffy things about it and I would rather understand OpenCore better so that I can do it easier next time with better knowledge, but so far I feel too dumb for this no matter how much I try.

Enough with my rant, I really need help with this as I'm already lost and no guides were able to help me boot this installer at all. I have no Mac device to make an installer and I've been doing tutorials for Windows. I also didn't use other configuration tools but ProperTree

Here's my system specs:

Toshiba Dynabook G83/DN
BIOS Version 1.80 (latest for this device)
Intel Core i5 8250U
Intel UHD Graphics 620
16GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM
SAMSUNG MZVLQ256HAJD-00000 256GB NVMe
Synaptics SMBus Touchpad (also shows as HID-compliant touch pad)
Realtek PCIE Card Reader
Realtek ALC285 Audio
Toshiba Web Camera
Toshiba Face Authentication Sensor
Intel Dualband Wireless AC8265
Intel Ethernet I219V

I'll be attaching my config.plist and opencore debug log for the load order and the error that I got.

Hoping for anyone interested to help me out make this installer run. Thank you very much. I'll be forever indebted to you guys and I hope I can return the favor here someday the more I get to know this better.

Well, the first thing one should do is not do have the full set of kexts or patches, if you're not an expert. That's what we have showed in the guides. That is because, the configuration should be as clean and as minimal as possible. It really does not matter if the WiFi does not work at start or the Graphics or the Card Reader. When you're sure that your hardware is compatible, those devices can be configured later during the postinstall. Its definitely a post install task. Once the macOS is installed, things get easier a bit.

Your config.plist is not as per the guide.

Start here:

Thank you very much!

I admit I am having a hard time following most of the written guides (primarily dortania's) because it doesn't have a clear breakpoint on where I should stop and start installing the OS and which ones are the post install stuff. I'm glad that I took the chance to ask here and I think it makes everything clear and easier to grasp now.

I'll follow that video carefully and I will let you know how it goes. Here's hoping it works. Thank you again!

P.S. Subscribed to the channel as well.

Thank you! I created the config according to the video step-by-step, chose 14,1 as the SMBIOS as that's the advised one for Kaby Lake in the tutorial, reset NVRAM twice to make sure, and it finally worked! It loaded up, but the issue right now is it freezes in the middle of installing, around "18 minutes remaining". I tried plugging my installer in a different port and the same issue persists.

I initially made this for a Ventura installation then I thought maybe doing Monterey instead would fare better. It did to some extent by not hanging immediately but it's still the same problem all in all. I tried using Safari from the recovery menu and it also hung up on me within less than 5 minutes. Here's my config and I'm confused what I'm doing wrong with this despite following everything step-by-step as possible. Please advise.

Hi, please ignore my earlier post. It's almost working now.

I read around here and I think I already figured out the culprit: wrong alcid value. I also added NVMEFix and set the alcid value to 11 and it seems to have fixed the crashes. The installer ain't crashing anymore but I'm seeing "Reinstall Monterey" and I'm getting a "pkDownload error 8". I'll see if I can read more to it right now.

EDIT: I tried to resolve this problem by redownloading my Monterey files but another problem came up.

Hi, I am having an issue with my installation not pushing through at all,. I tried making an APFS drive out of my NVME drive and it always end up hanging whenever I try making it. It does create an APFS container but it always crashes whenever I try making a partition. Please help. Thank you.

Read a bit more here and checked my NVME drive’s spec and it turns out that it’s a PM991 drive. Now that explains why it’s not pushing through. I’ll try using my other drive that has a Silicon Motion controller (an M.2) as it’s not in the drives to avoid. I’ll also update if it finally runs.

UPDATE: It still didn’t work, but some error did appear and I can’t find some good resources to fix it.

No dice, still stuck at 18 minutes remaining then it crashes and freezes with the Caps Lock unresponsive. Here’s the message I got

Osinstallersetupd[479]: opendirectory: prune orphaned unlocked records failed with error: Error Domain=10000 “Operation is not supported by the directory node.” UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=Operation is not supported by the directory node., NS…

I’ll be attaching the error here as well for more references. I tried looking this error up but I can’t find something relevant in my case. Will definitely appreciate any insight about this error. Thank you!

EDIT: added my config.plist for better insights. So far I haven't seen any resolution to this as I already tried what I can. Please help.

What's the boot disk model you're trying to install?
