I did a stupid thing.

Since its been so long, Ive forgotten how I got my system to boot in the first place. I created a TempUser account with owner privileges,

then, I created an additional account, Which is my actual user account, that had been given administrator privileges. that I would use for production if you will.

I was sitting there, typing one day, and opening various directories within Finder, and I noticed that several files had that dreaded red Circle-band. More info reported that my user account had no access, because they were a, system files, and, I wasn't owner.

In the attempt to rectify this curious problem, I began stupidly changing file permissions for that one file, and then I clicked that Doomsday button which let me apply that one setting, to all files and folders.

After doing this, things seem to be top-notch, until the Nvidia web Driver kept reminding me endless problems that its server crashed, and was inaccessible. I had no clue what this meant… I used the repair permissions method in disk utility, and H reported that the directory structure was healthy.

I did this multiple times. Line
I am so embarrassed to tell you this, but…

I delete it the temp user account, that had originally had owner privileges.

It wasn't until I decided to reboot the computer and find that I was no longer able to login come within an hour, but I remembered that the Champ user account was the failsafe account, that was supposed to have owner privileges, not had the power to resolve all sorts of other issues, and it was the account that always enabled me to log in.

I am not able to reboot into safe mode. I have this bizarre, mysterious error that keeps popping up in The output:

High Sierra on an unbranded notebook.

I have Clover Bootloader installed.

I can boot into recovery.

please, what can I do to fix this?

I tried to delete the kernel cache, and repair that S/L/E do you know avail.

Is there any way that I could possibly reinstall, without deleting my production user account?
Or, perhaps, is there any way that I could try to recreate my temp user account, with owner access, within single user mode itself?

thank you so very much for reading my post. I sincerely hope I will be able to get this issue resolved. My Hackintosh has been reliable for years, despite not being able to upgrade beyond High Sierra, due to having relied upon the NVIDIA Webdriver, which provides me full hardware acceleration, and not having any support beyond what I am using now.

Error message will be posted below. It's a little mangled, but I hope you get the gist.

You can login into the Champ account. Create a New User and set it to Administrator and then login to this New account. Once you login, change permission for your regular account and you can access the data. If this doesn't work, simply backup your data manually or create a disk image and then perform a clean install. NVIDIA drivers had certificate issues so it might be the reason in your case.

thank you so much for your reply.

Currently, I'm not completely certain which, "champ" account, which you are referring. How do I log into an account via terminal? Forgive me, but, I am slightly above novice knowledge of using terminal.

This is what I had been so unsure. I am currently not able to boot into the GUI.

Except, recovery and single user mode are my only options.

Well, that's what you mentioned in your previous post. If you can boot into single user mode or recovery and cannot boot into the GUI, just use this drive on other Mac and backup your data first.

Hmm. this may prove difficult, as my Poor, little High Sierra had been installed to SSD. I have an idea of what I should do based upon your recommendation, but that may include taking it out of my lappy, and fiddling on my Macbook.

years ago, several, several years ago, when this particular version was still a thing, I vaguely recall having been told that I could; it was possible to create a installer USB, and reinstall, which would not modify any of mine user settings, including DSDT, and kexts, but i've become forgetful in my old range.

Could anyone please confirm my theory, and method, in order to get my user interface back?

Also, I had hoped it were possible to recreate that user account, without having needed reinstalling.
I just need to recreate that Tempuser account, and give it not just Admin, but OwneR privileges, which which then restore booting access, once I've repaired permissions.

You can create a new account and then just apply the permissions and then can login into the old account. The other way is to connect the SSD to an existing Mac and then just copy the data manually.

thank you for your responses.

I understand that you are explaining to me that I could create a new account, but that is the problem, because of the symptoms I have described, I am not certain how to do this.

There is no simple method to create a new account, because everything that I have attempted, present me with errors.

Here are all of the links I have accessed, prior to posting in this thread, with the hope of resolving the issue:

I hope that by presenting these links based upon my research and self attempt to resolve the issue, it will provide better context regarding what I am facing.

Is it possible to create a user account at command line? That is, within single user mode, or/and, by accessing the terminal, after loading in recovery?

If so, how do I do this?

I do not know how to do this on my own.

I don't have this knowledge, and all of my attempts to repair the permissions have resulted in with those file access errors.

In recovery mode, strangely enough, the disk utility, claims that the file permissions are correct.

If it believes they are correct, they are correct for the wrong user.

if neither of these options are feasible, then perhaps it is time that I take the plunge…

Saying goodbye to the buttery smooth, full-hardware acceleration, NVIDIA Webdriver, and perform a USB-installer-upgrade, to which ever macOS version or characterisation, which is available.

Again, based upon my most recent research, seems like nobody is using Clover anymore, and have since defaulted to some other bootloader.

I have been highly reluctant to ever perform such an upgrade, because I don't want to give up the full hardware acceleration that worked so well with my discrete built in, non- upgradable mobile Geforce graphics adapter.

It appears that I can possibly get pseudo acceleration with that liquid metal technique, or whatever, I just wish that I had a clean tutorial that would guide me throughout this transition.

what do you reckon? Am I completely out of options, S*L, or, is there hope?
