How to check Laptop HDMI and other Display Output Ports connection
An EliteMacx86 Exclusive Guide - This guide describes how to check Laptop's HDMI and other display output ports connection. By following this guide, you'll be able to find which GPU your external display output are tied to.Overview
Normally, on Laptops, the internal screen is connected to the IGPU, and the other ports such as HDMI, mDP, DP, or VGA are also connected to IGPU. However, this is not the case with the Laptops with a dGPU. These Laptops usually have the internal screen connected to the IGPU/APU and the other ports are connected to NVIDIA/AMD, which is a DGPU.
When driving the display from the external ports, you may not be able to drive the display if the ports are connected to NVIDIA/AMD and/or you've disabled it via DSDT, SSDT, or boot arg. So, before you start to patch the framebuffers for HDMI/DP/mDP or Type-C, it's a good idea to find the ports whether they're connected to IGPU/APU or NVIDIA/AMD or you'll end up scratching your head.
Find the Connection
To find out the connection, or the ports tied to it, you'll need a copy of Windows 10 installed along with the drivers.
1. Right-click on Desktop and select Display Settings from the context menu.

2. Select Advanced Display under Related settings from the Display Window.

3. Connect your external monitor to the respective port you want to find the connection of.
4. Select the external monitor (normally Display 2) from the drop-down menu.
5. Look for the GPU name In the Display information section. You'll find whether your external ports for display are tied to the IGPU (Intel) or APU (AMD) or dGPU (NVIDIA/AMD).
