It could be likely possible, or even by both or the internal battery itself. You can try checking the schematic. However, if you don't need much detail, try to replace the CMOS and then check. On Battery, if the Laptop is shutting down, there could be some possible shorting via MOSFETs or the Charging IC itself.Well this is what I'm trying to figure out. As macOS is shutting down only when it's powered by battery I do belive that the cmos battery is charged only by the AC adapter.
