macOS Sonoma (14.0) Compatibility List - Will Your Mac Support it?

Today, at WWDC 2023, Apple announced their new macOS version i.e. macOS Sonoma (14). Whenever Apple releases a new version of its Operating System, one of the most common questions that arise is, “Will my Mac be compatible?” With the highly anticipated macOS 14 Sonoma, it is no different. Fortunately, we have an answer to your question.

If you're not new to Mac, you might be aware that whenever Apple releases a new version of its Operating System, regardless of the lineup, either Mac or other segments, it particularly drops the support for older models which makes them obsolete. With the release of macOS Sonoma, Apple has continued dropping the support for older Macs. Unfortunately, no Macs from 2016 and older are supported by macOS Sonoma except for the iMacPro 2017 model, which was quite a beast at the time of its release. Provided that, you'll either need a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, or Mac mini from 2018 or newer, or an iMac or Mac Pro from 2019 or newer to run macOS Sonoma. Fortunately, no Silicon models have been dropped as of now and if you're having a Silicon-based Mac, you can experience macOS Sonoma.

Apple generally offers software support for approximately five to seven years in its Mac lineup. Though this year, only one seven-year-old product, the iMac Pro is eligible for running macOS Sonoma. Those with older Macs might not be able to upgrade to the latest Operating System, but will still be able to use the maximum supported version of macOS as per the particular Mac model.

macOS Sonoma (14.0) supports both Apple Silicon Macs and Intel-based Macs. This hardware list comes directly from Apple's Official Website. Read the official macOS Sonoma System compatibility to confirm whether your current Mac hardware is supported and is capable of running macOS 14. While it's still in Beta, macOS Sonoma is coming this fall.

Following is the list of compatible Mac models which supports macOS Sonoma.
  • MacBook Air (2018 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (2018 and later)
  • Mac mini (2018 and later)
  • iMac (2019 and later)
  • iMac Pro (2017 and later)
  • Mac Pro (2019 and later)
  • Mac Studio (2022 and later)

If you're not sure which Mac model you have, you can check it using Apple Menu>About This Mac. If you find that you have a compatible Mac model, as per the above compatibility list, you can enjoy running macOS Sonoma.

Apple has announced that macOS Sonoma will be available in the fall, and there are currently beta versions available for those in the beta testing programs for macOS.

For comparison purposes, these are the Macs that are currently supported on macOS Ventura:
  • MacBook (Early 2017 and later)
  • MacBook Air (Early 2018 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (Early 2017 and later)
  • Mac mini (Late 2018 and later)
  • iMac (Late 2017 and later)
  • iMac Pro (2017 and later)
  • Mac Pro (Late 2019 and later)
  • Mac Studio (2022 and later)

Of course, users having an Unsupported Mac can also try out macOS Sonoma. However, you might have to wait on the update for fully functional hardware for which there is no ETA at the moment. If you want to clean install on your Unsupported Mac
