How to Download macOS Big Sur on Unsupported Mac

Recently, Apple announced their new macOS lineup i.e macOS Big Sur 11.0 which is Apple's newest and most awaited OS. Mojave adding massive updates and improvements from its predecessor, High Sierra.

Packed with new features and functionality, the most noticeable update can be seen and experienced is the new GUI. Featuring a much more "iOS" look and feel and as smooth as butter. With each release of macOS, Apple remove supports for old hardware.

Unfortunately, with the the release of macOS Big Sur, Apple has officially dropped support for their several Mac lineups including Mac Pro, iMac, MacBook and Mac mini. Luckily, for our fans and readers though, we've already covered a complete installation guide step-by-step.

Normally, you can obtain a copy of macOS Big Sur via System updates under System Preferences or can simply use App Store. But as you're using an unsupported Mac, you won't be able to get new updates as you're using unsupported Mac and Apple will block updates for new OS. However, there's another workaround available and you can download the copy of macOS Big Sur very easily.

Download Script


The next step is to download the script. Munki has developed a script called macadmin-scripts which will let you download the copy of macOS from Sierra to Big Sur.

Note:
Before you start, make sure you're having a working and stable internet connection.


Open Terminal and type the below command

curl -o ~/installinstallmacos.py https://raw.githubusercontent.com/munki/macadmin-scripts/main/installinstallmacos.py

This will download the installinstallmacos.py script to your user directory. The next step is to change the file permission

Download macOS Big Sur


Now, as we've the script, we can use it to download the copy of macOS Big Sur. Before that, you need to change the script permissions.
To change the permissions, type:

chmod +x ~/ installinstallmacos.py

To run the script, type:

sudo /Users/yourusername/installinstallmacos.py

When prompted, enter your password and it will download the catalog and list the available macOS version for download. Y

Select the product. The product are listed in the "#" column. To download macOS Big Sur, type 10 and press enter key

The script will start downloading the packages and the other required files. Once the script finishes download, it will create a sparseimage and will finally create a .DMG image. The DMG will be located in your user directory.

Open the .DMG image.

Copy the Install macOS Big Sur to Applications folder.

Quit the Terminal.

Now, you can use the image to create a Bootable USB. To create a Bootable USB, follow the guide below.
