Motherboard
iMac 8,1
CPU
E8135
Graphics
ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT
OS X/macOS
12.x
Bootloader
  1. OpenCore (UEFI)
Mac
  1. iMac
Mobile Phone
  1. iOS
So I've been following this guide. It's an easy-to-follow guide, and I like it, esp. that it's the only one so far that mentions iMac 8,1 as unofficially supported. I've been having a couple of issues.
  1. I run into this something similar to this error. Currently running dosdude1-patched Sierra on my iMac 2008. Flash drive's capacity = 16 GB.
  2. I got hold of a working PC and used Paragon to convert to GPT then format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Don't know why, but I was able to get setvars working. I clicked EFI Boot during boot, and iMac shut down successfully. But then, when I restarted and booted into Big Sur USB drive, I saw the Apple logo, then a loading bar under, and halfway through, everything was replaced with a (sad) prohibitory symbol.
Edit: My bootloader is boot.efi, ignore OpenCore on the left.

You don't need OpenCore at start. That's the last step to configure and is only required for updates.

The prohibited symbol is very common issue and it has been described under notes. Make sure to read it. Also, we advise you to start from scratch to avoid issues and you must use the target system to create the USB installer.

I now have Mojave installed. I started from scratch: I formatted USB in Mojave with Disk Utility. Everything went smoothly with making the USB bootable (thankfully no more errors) as well as with running Micropatcher. When I restarted, I selected ‘EFI Boot’. iMac shut down. I turned it back on, clicked ‘Install Mac OS Big Sur’. Apple logo and progress bar showed up. Halfway through, the prohibitory sign came up again. I recorded this here.

And it was done on the target machine? From your profile, it looks like you have iMac 8,1 right?

That is right. I did everything on this iMac.

Tests are in progress for the same issue. This thread and the guide will be updated soon.

Thanks, hope this can be of help: I used Ben Sova’s Patched Sur (based on Micropatcher), and I faced the exact same problem.

I would suggest to check it using Catalina patcher.
