How to Upgrade to macOS Big Sur [MacBook Pro/MacBook Air/MacBook/iMac Pro/iMac/Mac mini/Mac Pro

This guide is about upgrading your Mac to macOS Big Sur, the latest version of Mac Operating System from Apple.

Before you proceed with an upgrade, we suggest you to check the compatibility for Mac model.

Notes:
  • If you're running macOS Sierra or later and planning to upgrade to macOS Big Sur, you'll require 35.5 GB of storage for an upgrade. If you're running a previous release than macOS Sierra, you'll need upto 44.5 GB of storage for an upgrade to macOS Big Sur.
  • If you're running OS X Mountain Lion, you'll need to upgrade your Mac to OS X El Capitan first and then to macOS Big Sur.

Create a Backup of your Mac
Before you proceed with an upgrade, we advise you to perform a backup of your Mac. In case the upgrade fails or you encounter any issue with the upgrade, you can roll back to your existing installation.

Download macOS Big Sur
The next step is to download macOS Big Sur. To download macOS Big Sur, follow the steps below

1. If you're using macOS Mojave or later, you can obtain macOS Big Sur via Software Update. Click on Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click on Software Update. Alternatively, you can click on System Preferences and then click on Software Update.

If you're having trouble with Software Update, you can obtain a copy of macOS Big Sur via App Store. To Get macOS Big Sur and click on GET button to continue downloading macOS Big Sur.

If you plan to perform a clean installation, follow the guide below

Installation
Once the download completes, the installer will open automatically. Click on Continue and follow the instructions. At last, select your target drive and click on Install

Notes:

  • If the installer asks for a permission, enter your password when prompted.
  • During the upgrade process, your Mac might restart several times. You might get blank screen at certain times but that's normal and the installer is still working in background.

Complete Setup
If macOS Big Sur asks to setup few newer options, set it up by following onscreen instructions.
