Short update - i switched to a AMD Vega 56 card :-(

Got a 8GB Saphire for 99€ and it just works flawlessly. I removed the patches with OCLP (with Nvidia card active) and then swapped out the GPU. Reasons / problems:

  • Access to Microphone is not possible in Cisco Webex. Even if you set the permissions with tccplus it will complain about not having the privilege to access the microphone. Workaround: Use Webex embedded in your browser.
  • Metal is not supported. This was my primary issue since I want to use the machine with Logic Pro. Unfortunately the "cursor" or playback position indicator is not visible without metal (at least in newer Logic Versions) which makes Logic more or less unusable.
  • Some 3D applications (like minecraft) have very poor performance and stutter.
  • Many minor inconveniences caused mostly by amfi_get_out_of_my_way setting.

So overall I think it's a super cool thing to be able to run your Nvidia GPU on MacOS however - you get natively supported AMD GPUs for 30+ Euro (RX 460 2GB) that have decent performance.
