Hello everyone,

I’m reaching out to the community for help with a specific issue I’m encountering on my HP Omen 15-ce0xx setup. I've successfully installed macOS Ventura 13.6.1 on my machine, and I’m pleased to report that Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the Nvidia GTX 1060 graphics card are all functioning perfectly, including graphics acceleration.

However, I'm facing a problem with setting the refresh rate of my external monitor (Gigabyte M27Q) when connected via Thunderbolt 3 using a KVM switch. Here are the specifics:

  • Problem Description: When attempting to set the external monitor to 1440p at 170Hz, the display intermittently glitches and fails to maintain the refresh rate. If I set the refresh rate above 60Hz, the display starts and stops glitching in the Display Settings on macOS. The monitor works at 1440p 144Hz via HDMI and 1080p 144Hz via Thunderbolt 3, but anything above 60Hz at 1440p through Thunderbolt 3 fails.
  • Attempts and Observations:
    • I’ve tested various operating systems, including Windows, Ubuntu, and PopOS, where the monitor performs correctly at 1440p 170Hz.
    • The issue appears specific to macOS Ventura 13.6.1.
    • The audio from the monitor also fails to work when connected via KVM/Thunderbolt 3 port.
System Specifications:

  • CPU: i7-7700HQ
  • GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060 Max-Q (Note: HDMI and Thunderbolt are directly connected to the GPU; integrated graphics are not available even on Windows)
  • RAM: 16GB 2400MHz (8x2)
  • Motherboard Model: HP 8390
  • Motherboard Chipset: Intel HM175
  • BIOS Version: F.24
  • Network Card: Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265
I’ve exhausted all usual troubleshooting steps and would greatly appreciate any insights or suggestions from the community on how to resolve this issue. Is there a specific setting or workaround in macOS that I might be overlooking?

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

It could be because the NVIDIA support was removed since macOS Monterey and there has no further improvements, officially. However, using OCLP, the NVIDIA can be patched and made to work but there are certain limitations described in the NVIDIA Graphics patching guide.

Also, have you tried to connect directly to the monitor using TB/HDMI without the KVM switch?
