How to Fix Apple TV freezing on macOS

With some of the Motherboard, there is known freezing when using Apple TV with the AMD GPU running macOS Catalina. Whenever you try to Airplay or connect it using HDMI, the TV works for a second and then results in an instant freeze. This guide covers the fixing of Apple TV crashing on macOS Catalina.

The fix is so simple. You need to tweak the BIOS settings and config.plist

NOTE:
  • This fix is only for users running an AMD/NVIDIA. Intel HD/UHD has no such issues

STEP 1: Update your Apple TV firmware
The first step is to update your Apple TV firmware. If your Apple TV is running any old firmware, this could be the issue. So update the Apple TV firmware from the device itself.

STEP 2: BIOS Settings
To access your BIOS/UEFI, press and hold the Delete key on your Keyboard. The key may be different in your case. Refer to your Motherboard Guide/Manual.
  • Set Initial Display Output to PCIe 1 slot.
  • Set Internal Graphics to Enabled.
  • Save & Exit Setup.
STEP 3: Changing your SMBIOS
The next step is to change your SMBIOS. Change your SMBIOS to iMac 19,1. For more information on changing SMBIOS, follow this guide:

STEP 4: Restart your system
Once you've done all the above steps, restart the system.

Now you can run Apple TV without freezing!
