Upgrade from Mavericks to High Sierra finally successful, but unstable system

After logging out and logging in as another user the flickering was almost completely gone, and it was still after logging back in to my user. But soon the GUI froze. Closing the lid caused a very short sleep. When I opened it again the desktop was back, looking very disturbing. Changing the user got this away again, but not all the artifacts. There is a flaw in my configuration, even considering the many reports I read about the HD3000. I will take a break for a week or two.

After installing the security update 2020-006 the screen keeps flickering all the time, rendering the laptop almost useless. Before that it worked quite well when it did'nt hang. What was changed by this update?
NVIDIA Drivers.

This laptop has no NVIDIA card.

The system works better now, the glitches are almost gone, perhaps partially due to the SSDT-CPU-PM.aml created with ssdtPRGen. Some are still there, mostly when watching a video. There are suggestions to upgrade RAM which might help, but would not make sense on an old laptop. Sleep does not work, and all research did not provide a solution. The major problem that's left are the constant freezes, mostly soon after bootup and when browsing the web. They were also there in Lion and could be removed by installing SMC fan control, but there is no version that works with High Sierra.
It's impossible to upgrade App Store apps to later compatible versions although the system suggests it, but after every click on that it suggests it again instead of doing it until you have to give up. That's the same on a real Mac. Apparently these older compatible versions are not really there anymore. Apple should just tell that instead of fooling their users.
